DESIGNER Q&A: TAKE FIVE (or seven)

Bradley Odom is a visionary designer, mastermind and principal behind Atlanta’s Dixon Rye, a furniture and design shop full of the most needful things. His mantra – buy fewer, better things – resonates with HPxD flagships – and we follow the calling. Bradley and team practice “intentional design.” His spaces seem meant to be – natural, organic, quirky and original. We’re apt to hang on his every word…

#1 THINK OF YOUR THREE FAVORITE HIGH POINT SHOWROOMS. WHAT DO THEY SHARE IN COMMON? IT’S OK TO NAME NAMES!

“I’m drawn to the visual inspiration that’s offered in showrooms like, Schwung Home, Verellen and Randall Tysinger Antiques. So much of it is the authenticity of the relationships we’ve built with these vendors.” BO

#2 THE SPIRIT OF WHERE’S WALDO, WHAT THING OR PRINCIPLE IS PRESENT IN ALL YOUR WORK?

“The most obvious thread would be our ability to masterfully mix materials and edit out the unnecessary. Often times, we choose a more masculine palette, but you still are able to see the thread from project to project. The idea of mixing modern with traditional, old with new, metal with wood is always fun!” BO

#3 NEXT, PLEASE PLACE THREE ITEMS IN A HIGH POINT TIME CAPSULE TO BE REOPENED IN 100 YEARS. CAN YOU GIVE US THREE TANGIBLE ITEMS THAT REPRESENT YOUR HIGH POINT?

“First, hands down is Taco Night at Cisco Brothers. Second, martinis with our friends from Lancaster Custom Upholstery and lastly anything Schwung Home, including the people.” BO

#4 HAVE YOU ESTABLISHED ANY HP MARKET TRADITIONS?

“Come early. Stay late.” BO

#5 BRIEFLY RECOUNT A FAVORITE “ONLY IN HIGH POINT” MOMENT FROM MARKETS PAST.

“Once we felt confident we could park in one of our vendors parking. That didn’t work out so well. Not knowing it was our car, we got towed. Once we found out where the car was, we ubered over, crawled over the fence and waited for someone to come unlock the gate. We broke all the rules but I’m an ask-for-forgiveness kinda person.” BO

#6 IF BY CHANCE YOU EVER HAVE A CREATIVE BLOCK, HOW DO YOU GET UNSTUCK?

“I travel! Get me on an airplane or a long road trip as soon as possible. It really is about new experiences that seem to be the unlock for me.” BO

#7 WHAT IS THE BEST PART OF YOUR JOB – THE PART THAT KEEPS YOU GOING EVERY DAY?

“That I get to have my hands in all things creative: sourcing, designing, buying, merchandising, marketing, and yes, even a little finance. I’m grateful to have a team of people who are creative, inspiring and never settle for mediocre.” BO
