When you make an appointment at Design Theory, you’re stepping behind the scenes into a bustling, multi-building manufacturing facility in High Point.
Run by brother-and-sister team Scott and Soomi Kim, Design Theory is a trusted resource in furniture production, crafting upholstered pieces for nationally recognized residential and commercial home furnishings brands while also offering a carefully curated to-the-trade collection.
The Kims’ passion for home furnishings was cultivated early. After immigrating from South Korea to High Point, their father pursued a career in the furniture industry, while their mother launched an interior design business, primarily helping Korean families furnish their New York vacation homes. Today, she oversees fabric selections at the company.
Design Theory’s trade collection remains intentionally focused, yet it is continually evolving. The collection currently includes three sofa styles, three occasional chairs, two beds, dining chairs (with wood frames imported from Italy), and ottomans—including customizable rug-covered ottomans (just bring your rug!).
For those working with Design Theory’s in-stock fabrics, lead times are typically just 2–3 weeks. The selection includes a trove of neutral body cloth fabrics from top brands like Kravet and Thibaut, ensuring both style and performance. Another key to a quick turnaround is that Design Theory makes their own cushions, offering options such as feather blend, Trillium, and high-density foam.
“Cushion construction is something we really study,” Soomi emphasizes. “Durability and comfort are top priorities.”
