HPxD launches event focused on neurodiversity and design
When High Point was deemed a Certified Autism Destination in 2023, it was clear to HPxD that Design should respond. That response is Design Forward, a three-part educational series that will connect the dots between the built environment and neurodiversity. Offering tailored programming for interior designers, the community, and real estate professionals. Design Forward is grounded in the belief that inclusive design benefits all.
Speakers for the event are all designers or design-adjacents and parents or guardians of children with intellectual or developmental disabilities. Featured guests include Shelly Rosenberg/Acorn & Oak, Lisa Kahn-Allen/Finding Sanctuary by Lisa Kahn Design, Kristin Bartone/ Bartone Interiors, Natalie Castro/Autism Home Specialist.
The day of education for the trade is November 12. Focused on the business of designing for neurodiverse clients, attention will be on the special process of working with them from intake to install, examining how elements of design can affect those with sensory sensitivies. Additionally, marketing in this niche will be a topic of discussion. The event will take place at The Learning Center at Universal. Tickets are $119 and can be purchased here. The next morning, at Congdon Yards, there will be programming for the community from 8:30-11:30. it will cover the impact design has on human beings, specifically its influence on those with autism and other intellectual and developmental disabilities. Covering topics such as safety and triggers, the shared information will empower people in their home environments through the lens of interior design. Tickets will be $20 and can be purchased here.
The final Design Forward event is for real estate professionals and will begin with a presentation –“The REALTOR’s Guide to Autism: Best Practices for Working with Families of Children with Autism” – by Natalie Castro of Autism Friendly Homes. It will be followed by a panel outlining the way Designers and REALTORS can collaborate for best outcomes. Areas of focus include the unique needs of autism families during relocation, safety, community surroundings and resources, as well as home layout and its impact on the senses. This event is hosted by Pandora’s Manor and will be followed by a social hour and tour of the bed and breakfast. REALTORS who attend and complete the education will receive a certificate by email.
